When Karen and Karenni families began arriving in Waterloo through secondary migration, they came from communities across the United States in search of new opportunities and stable employment. Many arrived with very little as they started over once again.

Sacred Heart Church became an important part of that journey. Under the leadership of its priest and with the dedication of countless volunteers, the church gathered furniture, household items and food to help families create new homes. Donations were stored anywhere space could be found—even in the church garage—and volunteers delivered beds, dressers, tables and other essentials wherever they were needed.

It wasn't just about providing things. It was about welcoming neighbors with dignity, compassion and practical support.

One of those longtime Sacred Heart volunteers later helped World Grace Project create what is now simply known as The Store. Inspired by those early efforts, the vision was to organize donated household goods into a welcoming space where families could choose the items they needed rather than simply receive whatever was available.

Today, The Store continues that same tradition of hospitality.

Through generous donations from individuals, churches and community partners, refugee and immigrant families can find furniture, kitchen supplies, linens, household essentials and other everyday items that help transform a house into a home.

More than a collection of donated goods, The Store is a reflection of our community's belief that every family deserves to begin again with dignity.

Because sometimes the simplest acts of hospitality—a bed to sleep in, a table to gather around or a kitchen stocked for the first meal—become the foundation for a new beginning.

Together, we're harvesting the power of community, one home at a time.
